About This Book
Overview

Maverick Hong Kong director surprised filmgoers with this 1991 drama, which he ended up co-directing after arthouse moviemaker Yim Ho left the production. The film opens in Taiwan, where an ad man turns a child into a chess prodigy to save a ratings challeged TV star. It stars John Sham, better known for his comedic roles. The central character thinks back to his tragic encounter with another chess master, played by Tony Leung Kar-fai, during China’s Cultural Revolution. Given the political sensitivities of the script, the scenes set in Mainland China were also shot in Taiwan.

After its troubled production history, the film slipped into obscurity, but has since been rediscovered as something of a cult classic.

Reel East has this remarkable rare large format poster, printed on thick paper, that commemorates the film.
