Before the young John Woo made his name with high octane gangster gunplay actioners like ‘A Better Tomorrow’ and ‘The Killer’, he made his cinematic love letter to Charlie Chaplin, ‘Laughing Times’. The film stars the late Dean Shek as a Chinese version of Chaplin’s Little Tramp character. The images and story line are so close to Chaplin’s that the comic’s estate threatened legal action, meaning that ‘Laughing Times’ has been little seen in recent years.
