Once Upon A Time In China 2 – English lobbycards

When you talk Hung Gar Heroes, you’re talking Wong Fei-hung, and for a whole younger generation of film fans, that meant Jet Li. Its a rare thing when a sequel lives up to a classic, but ‘Once Upon a Time in China 2’ does just that.

Director Tsui Hark remixed the material for a second reimagining of this Cantonese folk hero. Max Mok replaced Jacky Cheung as Wong’s student Leung Foon for this film, and the rest of the 90s Wong Fei-hung series. Kent Cheng’s Lam Sai-wing is MIA for this and the next film in the series. Where the first ‘Once Upon a Time in China’ had been action directed by diverse hands, the second movie was choreographed by martial maestro Yuen Woo-ping.

Actress Rosamund Kwan returns as Wong’s paramour, performing the second act of the greatest three act love story in kung fu cinema history.

Martial arts superstar-in-waiting Donnie Yen came back to centre stage to match weapons skills with Jet Li, and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards. The film also finds a fine supporting villain role for Hung Yan Yan, already performing sterling work as Li’s main stunt double, and later to incarnate the role of Wong’s student Ah Chut in the third ‘Once Upon a Time in China’ movie.

Though he doesn’t fight in the film, former Shaw Bros action star David Chiang provides a sterling performance as a noble patriot, as does Mainland Chinese actor Zhang Tie-lin as the ‘Father of Modern China’ himself, Sun Yat-sen.

‘Once Upon a Time in China 2’ proved the newly rebooted kung fu movie genre was here to stay. Reel East are excited to share the original memorabilia created by Golden Harvest to promote it.
