About This Book
Overview

From the glory days of Hong Kong action cinema, Reel East presents The Lost Fists Collection. We celebrate the unsung legacy of the other kung fu heroes who fought in the shadow of Bruce Lee and Wang Yu.

‘The Shaolin Boxer’ stars Taiwanese martial arts actor James Tien in a rare solo starring role. Tien had been a classmate of Angela Mao Ying at Taipei’s Chinese Opera school. Signed by the Shaw Bros studio, he appeared in supporting roles in several movies before moving to Golden Harvest, where he was groomed for stardom. James Tien was originally tipped as the lead player in ‘The Big Boss’, but had to step aside to allow for the return of Bruce Lee.

Tien went on to appear in Lee’s ‘Fist of Fury’ and his unfinished ‘Game of Death’. After Lee’s death, the actor was also cast in supporting roles in the films of other kung fu stars including Jimmy Wang Yu and Cheng Pei Pei.

‘The Shaolin Boxer’  sees James Tien get a lead of his own. Shot in Hong Kong, this martial arts actioner was directed by Huang Ta otherwise best known for helming Bolo Yeung’s ‘Chinese Hercules’. It was choreographed by Tony Ching Siu-tung, later to become a director and choreographer of great renowned with films including ‘A Chinese Ghost Story’, ‘Swordsman 2’ and ‘Hero’.

The film was an independent production distributed in Hong Kong and around the world by Golden Harvest.
