Director Tsui Hark brought the Hong Kong fantastique genre into the modern era with his masterful ‘Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain’. Set in a mythic land, the film follows the adventures of a pair of hapless humans who find themselves setting out on an awe-inspiring odyssey. Tsui called on Hollywoos VFX experts to help achieve his vision, but most of this magical masterwork was shot in camera, without the benefit of modern CGI.
Tsui’s all-star cast was led by young action aces Yuen Biao and Mung Hoi, alongside ingenue Moon Lee and swordplay veteran Adam Cheng. The film’s deities are portrayed by the likes of Brigitte Lin and Sammo Hung. The film’s action was so intricate that it required four choreographers, all of whom also appear in the film.
