In 1988, action icon Jackie Chan produced a romantic supernatural drama that brought together two of the greatest Chinese singing stars, Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung. The film cast Mui and Cheung as star-crossed lovers in 192os Hong Kong who make a pact to commit suicide, and then meet in Hong Kong to share their afterlife. Only one of them, Fleur (Anita Mui), returns, and tries to find her lost love. The film was directed by Jackie’s former assistant director, Stanley Kwan. ‘Rouge’ was critically acclaimed on release, and is now regarded as a Hong Kong cinema classic.
