Before he defined himself and a new genre with ‘Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow’, Jackie Chan starred in a series of films that have earned their own cult following. Reel East is proud to present rare genuine memorabilia from these lost epics. Given the star’s then spelling of his English name, this is The Jacky Chan Collection.
‘Shaolin Wooden Men’ is one of the best regarded of the early films of Jackie/Jacky. Directed by Lo Wei, the movie was shot in Taiwan, and sets the stage for Chan’s later success by casting him as an underdog hero. It puts Jacky in the midst of the tropes of the Shaw Bros era kung fu cinema, as an Alexander Fu Sheng-style lay student training at the Shaolin Temple. His character is ‘punished’ by being sent to a cell containing a crazy monk that he learns from, a plot device reused many times thereafter.
The film was choreographed by Jacky himself, and features a cameo from his former Opera school classmate Yuen Biao.
A flop on first release, ‘Shaolin Wooden Men’ has since attracted a worldwide fan following. Reel East and The Jacky Chan Collection are proud to celebrate ‘Shaolin Wooden Men’ by making this incredibly rare set of colour lobbycards, printed for the 1976 release of the film, available to Chan’s worldwide fanbase.
