Reel East’s The Sammo Hung Collection celebrates the work of China’s Orson Welles of action. This triple threat actor, director and choreographer has spent most of his career revolutionising Hong Kong action cinema. Reel East is proud to present original memorabilia from some of Sammo’s milestone movies.

‘Spooky Encounters’ saw Sammo blend traditional Chinese supernature and martial arts to masterful effect. Always a trend-setter, Hung’s genre blending hit was a major hit in his native territory, and remains a firm fan favourite to this day.

Director and star Sammo Hung introduced modern audiences to the wild world of Chinese Spirit Boxing, to a unique form of kung fu-centric possession, to the unique hopping vampires of ancient China. The practical effects Hung employed in the pre-CGI era stand up to this day, and the martial arts sequences still deliver.

Hung plays a naive everyman drawn into a conspiracy that sees a town elder employ Chinese black magic against him. True to form, Sammo elicits career best performances from his supporting players. These include Chung Fat as a benevolent magician, Peter Chan Lung as his rival and Hung Ha as the devious villain of the piece.

The film, also known as ‘Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind’, was shot entirely on location in Hong Kong and at the Golden Harvest studios.
