Its been said that every American director has at least one Western in him, and each Chinese film-maker has at least one wu xia actioner in him (0r her). For the cult director Patrick Tam, that movie was ‘The Sword’. Shot in Hong Kong’s New Territories, the movie cast genre veteran Adam Cheng as an heroic swordsman. Cheng had appeared in dozens of wu xia TV series and films, and was one of the few bona fide kung fu students of Shaw Brothers legend Lau Kar-leung. ‘The Sword’ also found roles for industry veterans Tsui Siu-keung, James Tien and Lee Hoi-sang. This eastern Western was choreographed by the great Ching Siu-tung, and is now regarded as one of the lost classics of swordplay cinema.
