Swordsman Theatrical Poster

Reel East celebrates this unique work that combines the visionary talents of legendary director King Hu, maverick Hong Kong movie-maker Tsui Hark and wu xia novelist par excellence Louis Cha : ‘Swordsman’.

Tsui Hark worshipped at the altar of King Hu since he first watched the Shaw Brothers classic ‘Come Drink With Me’. In 1990, he fulfilled a lifelong dream when he developed a film that he hoped would be the great director’s final bow. When filming began, Tsui realised that King Hu lacked the physical strength for the demanding shoot. Rather than abandon the project, Tsui Hark gathered together a team of directors, including himself, Ann Hui, Andrew Kam, Raymond Lee and Ching Siu-tung. He instructed them to direct as though possessed by the spirit of King Hu…

‘Swordsman’ works wonderfully well. It stars actor/singers Sam Hui and Jacky Cheung, and a who’s who of genre veterans, including Yuen Wah, Lam Ching-ying and, in his final role, ‘The Big Boss’ himself, King Hu’s old comrade Han Ying-chieh. With its blend of spectacle, luminous cinematography and stylised combat, it was a commercial and critical success.
